Susan Friedman

 Equus - Torsos

Her artistic eye brings form and time together as she captures these animals in their everyday activities: at the end of race, being bathed, after a gallop. The “torso paintings” allow the viewer to be there in the moment. Not only do the photographs show us what is familiar, but exposes us to what we may not have seen before. These fourteen works of art reveal minute details like the shaved curves of a coat, bouncing drops of water, flecks of hay on a rump, the embedded marks of the stirrups and saddles.

By fragmenting the body, Susan Friedman’s photographs fill the frame with possibilities, taking the horse out of the romantic and into the abstract, more painterly world.                      Judy Shintani
